Towards Climate-Resilient World: Challenges for Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Information Platform on disaster risk reduction

On December 11th, 2019, the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ), Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), and National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) co-organized a side event “Towards Climate-Resilient World: Challenges for Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Information Platform on disaster risk reduction” at the 25th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP25) in Madrid, Spain.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Shinjiro Koizumi, the Minister of the Environment, Japan, introduced Japan’s strategy for climate change adaptation, including the Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Information Platform (AP-PLAT), which was officially launched in June 2019. He also announced that Japan will host an international conference on climate change and disaster risk reduction and the Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Forum in 2020. Following the keynote speech by Ms. Mami Mizutori, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Head of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), AP-PLAT partner countries and organizations (NIES; Ministry of National Development and Planning (BAPPENAS), Indonesia; Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP), Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE), Thailand; Pacific Climate Change Center (PCCC); Asian Development Bank (ADB); and IGES) presented their activities on climate change adaptation in the Asia-Pacific region. Dr. Mimi Nameki, from NIES, noted that they will introduce more scientific information related to climate change and its impacts on the AP-PLAT website. The representatives of partner countries and organizations highlighted the importance of sharing scientific knowledge for making decisions on disaster risk reduction, and agreed to further enhance cooperation to realize a climate-resilient world.
