The 3rd International Climate Change Adaptation Platform Meeting

Date 27-28/Nov/2019
Location Tsukuba, Japan
Presentation by Dr. Hijioka (NIES) about CCCA’s activity

The National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) organized the 3rd International Climate Change Adaptation Platform Meeting in Tsukuba.

NIES invited global experts from 14 institutions to share knowledge and information related to developing and operating national climate change adaptation information platforms, share recent activities in supporting local government and other stakeholders working on climate change adaptation through national climate change adaptation information platforms, and support establishment of national climate change adaptation information platforms in Asia-Pacific countries.

On the first day, the NIES presented recent activities of its Center for Climate Change Adaptation (CCCA) and the progress on the development of the Climate Change Adaptation Information Platform (A-PLAT) from the perspectives of adaptations for citizens, local governments, and the private sector, as well as the Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Information Platform (AP-PLAT). Then, global experts gave their feedback and significant advice based on their experiences and knowledge on issues and challenges faced by NIES.

Later that day, each global expert presented their status and future action initiatives on their platforms. There was a lively exchange of opinions and constructive discussions.

On the second day of the meeting, details were announced regarding the international project decided at the 2nd International Climate Change Adaptation Platform Meeting held in Dublin, Ireland in October. The project provides a forum for platform developers and operators to come together to compare and learn from their individual approaches, share knowledge and best practices, and collaborate to address common and emerging challenges. The overall aims are to stimulate knowledge exchange to advance cooperation and learning and inspire the evolution of national and regional adaptation platforms concerning scope, governance, content coverage, functionality, and management.

The meeting was closed after confirming further cooperation between experts as well as the next meeting, which will be held in September 2020.

Based on the meeting’s fruitful discussions, the NIES will further develop A-PLAT and AP-PLAT to increase the usefulness of these platforms for our users.
