AP-PLAT Participated in JICA Knowledge Co-Creation Program on Climate Change Adaptation Initiatives and Outreach Tools
| Event | JICA FY2025 Knowledge Co-Creation Program (KCCP) “Climate Change Adaptation Initiatives and Outreach Tools” |
|---|---|
| Date | 12 February 2026 |
| Place | National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Tsukuba, Japan |
| Organizers | Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Yokohama Center |
Participants in the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Yokohama Center’s training course on Climate Change Adaptation Initiatives and Outreach Tools visited the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES). On 12 February 2026, AP-PLAT contributed to the program through lectures delivered by Dr. Hiroya Abe and Ms. Slavka Hubrova of the AP-PLAT team.
JICA COURSE OVERVIEW
The JICA Yokohama Center organizes a thematic training program titled “Climate Change Measures for Paris Agreement Implementation (Long-Term Low Greenhouse Gas Emission Development Strategies: LT-LEDS)”. The course was conducted from 29 January to 18 February 2026, with one session held at the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) on 12 February.
During the session at NIES, AP-PLAT delivered a comprehensive introduction to its tools and initiatives for climate change adaptation. In addition, Dr. Shuichi Ashina of the Social Systems Division presented a lecture titled “Long-term Scenarios and Goal Setting Using AIM (Asia-Pacific Integrated Model),” highlighting the application of integrated modeling for long-term climate strategy development.
The session was attended by participants from Egypt, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Jamaica, and Malaysia.
AP-PLAT’S CONTRIBUTION
AP-PLAT contributed to the program through two lectures.
In the first lecture, Dr. Hiroya Abe outlined the positioning of Japan’s Climate Change Adaptation Act and introduced the roles of two key platforms: A-PLAT and AP-PLAT. He emphasized the practical value of AP-PLAT’s tools in supporting climate risk assessment and adaptation planning. Participants were informed that the ClimoCast can be used to understand past and future climate changes, the Climate Impact Viewer to assess potential impacts, and the Adaptation Database to explore available adaptation measures.
In the second lecture, Ms. Slavka Hubrova introduced the Adaptation Database. Launched in December 2023, the Adaptation Database is an open-access platform designed to support learning and action on climate change adaptation. As of 12 February 2026, it featured 210 case studies from the Asia-Pacific region and around the world, along with profiles of organizations engaged in adaptation efforts.
The Adaptation Database transforms technical adaptation projects into accessible, reader-friendly, non-academic articles for a broad audience, thereby bridging information gaps between researchers, policymakers, and practitioners.
The session generated active questions and comments, especially regarding the submission of case study articles.
AP-PLAT greatly appreciates the active engagement and thoughtful feedback provided by the participants and JICA coordinators. We hope to build on this exchange and further deepen our cooperation moving forward.
RELATED INFORMATION
- JICA Knowledge Co-Creation Program (KCCP)
- LT-LEDS serve as visionary roadmaps under the Paris Agreement, detailing how nations intend to achieve net-zero emissions by or around mid-century while fostering sustainable economic growth and social welfare. By establishing this long-term perspective, LT-LEDS guide the ambition of shorter-term Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and help identify the structural transformations required across key sectors to transition to a low-carbon economy.
- The Asia-Pacific Integrated Model (AIM) is a large-scale computer simulation model developed by the National Institute for Environmental Studies in collaboration with Kyoto University, Mizuho Information & Research Institute and several research institutes in the Asia-Pacific region. The AIM assesses policy options for stabilizing the global climate, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, with the objectives of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and avoiding the impacts of climate change.
