OVERVIEW
Dr. Yuji Masutomi of AP-PLAT participated in the 27th Intergovernmental Meeting and Scientific Planning Group Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN), held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 9 to 10 July 2026.
APN is an intergovernmental network that promotes regional cooperation and research on global environmental change across the Asia-Pacific region, supporting science-policy linkages and capacity development.
Marking APN’s 30th anniversary, the meeting reviewed APN’s achievements and future direction, and approved its Sixth Strategic Plan (2026–2030). The Plan sets five strategic goals: regional research, scientific capacity development, science–policy interactions, stakeholder engagement, and institutional and financial sustainability.
About 70 participants attended, including government officials from 17 countries, Scientific Planning Group members, invited experts, observers, and the APN Secretariat.
The event also included the 11th APN Early Career Professional Poster and Networking Session, held under the theme “Climate Change and Variability and Disaster Risk Reduction.” The session provided early-career professionals opportunities to share research findings, engage with scientists and government officials, and discuss climate change, disaster risk reduction, and resilience in the region.
AP-PLAT’S CONTRIBUTION
Dr. Masutomi of AP-PLAT participated in the 27th Meeting as an invited expert member of APN’s Capacity Development Committee (CDC). As along-time member of the Committee, Dr. Masutomi has reviewed and evaluated multiple project proposals, bringing a researcher’s perspective to APN’s funding decisions. While his service on the CDC has now concluded, he will continue his engagement with APN as the Scientific Planning Group (SPG) member for Japan. This will enable him to contribute even more directly to the integration of scientific knowledge into APN’s activities.
At the 27th Meeting and associated meetings in July, Dr. Masutomi contributed to discussions and approval of APN’s annual work plan and other key agenda items.
APN – AP-PLAT COLLABORATION
In 2025, APN and AP-PLAT developed 74 case studies for the AP-PLAT Adaptation Database based on APN-funded projects. In 2026, the collaboration continues by strengthening links between APN project pages and the corresponding AP-PLAT Database case studies.
The collaboration and Adaptation Database were showcased at the meeting through a presentation and a roll-up banner.
CLOSING
The meeting reaffirmed APN’s role in connecting research, policy and practice in addressing climate change and other environmental risks across the Asia-Pacific region.
AP-PLAT will continue to share scientific information, adaptation tools, and case studies, including APN-funded projects, to support climate-resilient development in the region.
